PostSubject: Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings   Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings EmptyMon Jun 28, 2010 6:46 pm

Heya, all. I've been working on a potential project involving reworkings of Public Domain characters, and I thought I'd show off some of their designs as I come up with them. Mind you, these sketches are pretty rough, as I'm coming off of a pretty long art block and am still getting back up to my old skill level, which is why working with these characters has been a real shot in the creative arm.

I have two so far, but as I do more, I'll post them in this thread. Starting off, here's my take on "USA, The Spirit of Old Glory":

And "Lockjaw the Aligator":

USA looks good (although something about the proportions seems strange...or I could just not be used to your art style).

Lockjaw is pretty awesome. Is he one of those "funny animal" characters?

HA! Not just a funny animal character, a funny character created by Jack Kirby.

And how many of us get to say we revamped a forgotten Kirby character after all? LOL

Probably a little of both, honestly...I'm coming off of a long art block, so my skills, even on sketches like this, are still pretty rusty.

Wow, I'm diggin' it! USA's arms and torso are a little short, but she looks really cute. I think part of it is just the manga style. Lockjaw looks like a bad mother.

Thanks...I'm still really rusty, but I tried using something other than my "generic mannequin pose" for the next couple of pics.

See, the idea I'm working with is that Mr. E, at the behest of King Kolah, recruits a group of runaways and homeless people rescued from The Claw to take up the equipment and costumes of the Golden-Age heroes to fight back. The first couple here are the new Golden Girl:

...and "SheBoom," using Lash Lightning's Amulet of Annihilation and the original Firefly's uniform:

Lockjaw and USA are also part of it, but I haven't decided where they fit in yet...I'm also trying to figure out how to bring Crimebuster into it because I've become a fan of his during my research, but without using freezing or suspended animation (partly because I already am using that for a different character).

Your drawings are fantastic. Very fun to look at. For Crimebuster, there is always the various forms of time travel to consider (magical or scientific) and there is the classic "stuck in a magic talisman" or "stuck in a magic dimension" routine. Magic is very convenient for keeping a character young throughout the ages. Heck, maybe he DID get old and found a fountain of youth that brought him back to his prime, and it's just a matter of time now before he turns to dust, but he has one more mission to accomplish.

Your hand aren't terrible, it's not something I would pick out as being wrong with the drawings. Jun-Gal overall looks pretty badass to me.

I like Jun-Gal. Out of curiosity, what made you decide to give her claws? Is she a catgirl?

Not as such, actually, but since she was relocated to the city in my story, it made sense to me to give her a means of getting around from building to building. I'm going to put the link to my deviantArt gallery in my sig; the descriptions for each of these pics explains things a little better.

Speaking of which, here's the next lot - Renardine the Fox:

Well, my initial idea was to give him Rip Regan's power jacket and Capt. Wizard's cape and make him a little more like Superboy, really, but considering all the "flying bricks" I already have on the team, and considering he was also fighting supervillains unpowered for over a decade in the Golden Age, anyway, I was thinking I might actually MAKE him the "Robin" of the team.

This next one is a result of a horrible pun of a name coming to mind at 4AM...see, I've got a bit of a rep as a master of Rule 63 ("For every fictional character, there is a female version"), and, after trying to think of what to do with The Shape, I got this: Shape-Lass
Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings ShapeLass1
Not the best pic for showing off her uniform so I put the reworked chest emblem on her hammer (the idea was the old "target" symbol got twisted into an "S" shape). She doesn't really match the story or general tone I'm working on as-is, but she's 2 days old, I can tinker.

Very interesting take on "The Shape." In fact, I like the shape of this Shape much better. But to be honest, I had to look this one up. Never heard of the Shape before.

Hey, quick question that I'm kinda stumped on and want the board's opinion: should Crimebuster actually have Rip Regan's jacket and Capt. Wizard's cape, thus making him akin to Superboy/Capt. Marvel Jr. or should he just be a Robin-type?

I think that depends on the kind of story you're planning to use him in. Robin is a great character, especially as a leader type. I don't know why, but I've always liked the idea of a normal, but highly skilled human, leading a team of powerful superhumans, who are maybe not quite as battle saavy without their powers. I think Crimebuster could play that role brilliantly. But maybe at some point, his team is captured or defeated, and he stands alone against a powerful enemy, that crushed the rest of the team...and his only option is to seek out powers of his own to save them...and at that point you allow him to evolve with these new power talismans. That is how I would do it.

By the by, I haven't given up on this project...I had a death in the family the day before my birthday back in August and it sorta triggered a bit of a mid-life crisis, so I ended up putting all of my projects on hold while I got my feet back under me again.

One thing I AM considering is using the original names of the characters my revamps are based on instead of coming up with new ones, since they are all on a team and, if I actually DO manage to do anything professionally with the idea, I'd have the team name on the cover instead of the characters'.

It's been a long while, but at least I'm back with some new designs...OK, so they're all female for now, but I don't plan on making Femforce: The Next Generation (yet, at least...).

First off, I did a tweak of Shape-Lass, my previous Rule 63 of The Shape:
Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings Yl__shape_lass1_zps00a16b17
While the idea was that her right arm is hidden, it instead looks like her "hair" is her arm...which I kinda like, actually.

Next up is another Rule 63, this time of Daredevil. For obvious reasons I'm not using THAT name; the name I gave my creation is "Devil-May-Care" but I realized that, actually, there apparently hasn't actually ever been a published heroine named "She-Devil" so I MIGHT use that one...I'm undecided ATM.
Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings Yl__devil_may_care_zpsf1cfb6ce
Honestly, I like this one, although it's simplicity is kinda...troubling. I keep wanting to add more spikes or something. Too many 90s Image comics, I guess.

Lastly is the most popular of these redesigns at my gallery, Golden Gal.
Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings Yl__golden_gal2A_zps3117e0f7
She was originally blonde haired and blue eyed like the original Golden Lad/Girl characters, but I realized I've never seen a POC Supergirl/Mary Marvel type and decided to rectify that...and I really like the results. I'll be honest, though, I haven't decided 100% WHAT her actual race is...my first instinct was African-American, but then I remembered the Heart of Gold was an Aztec artifact, so maybe she is a descendant of their people, accidentally reunited with the Heart centuries after the civilization had fallen..?

Yeah, I know, my coloring sucks, but overall I like how these have turned out so far.

Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings Empty
PostSubject: Re: Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings   Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings EmptyMon Oct 06, 2014 10:02 pm

While she doesn't exactly count as a "Public Domain Revamp or Reimagining," I figgered I'd just post these here instead of in a new thread since her creation was influenced by discussions I had here. See, a few years ago I came up with an attempt at undoing the damage done to the Marvel Family by DC Comics since the new millennium started, called "Billy's Quest," and since the PDSH Wiki had stated that the original Fawcett versions were now in the public domain, ran it by the forum here. Both here and at my art gallery, it was advised that I, basically, not use the actual Marvels for it...and, after the catastrophic destruction of the DCU back in 2011, there didn't seem to be much point in undoing what had been done to the now non-existant Marvel Family anyway.

...what "New 52?" THERE IS NO "NEW 52"..! *eyetwitch, eyetwitch*

...anyway...I ended up partially following that advice (although I STILL adore that "Willy Watson, Captain Wizard" idea that was suggested here) and reworked the story around the characters and names still owned by DC and Marvel. The result...BILLIE FREEMAN: WORLD'S MIGHTIEST MORTAL!
Public Domain Revamps and Reimaginings Billie1_zps22c52276
The daughter of Mary Batson and Freddie Freeman, and niece to Billy (her namesake), Billie was orphaned as an infant when the Marvel Family left her in the care of their Uncle Dudley while they went into battle with their enemies...and vanished. Dudley and his daughter, Freckles, took Billie and went into hiding, fearing attack by enemies of her parents.

Ten years have passed, and young Billie is every bit the hero her family was, having her mother's gentleness, her father's headstrong temperament, and her uncle's courage...which inevitably results in the Dudleys having to uproot and move due to her getting into trouble playing hero. On her 10th birthday, however, she is approached by Athena, Goddess of War, and charged with a mission: to gain the powers of a new set of gods and legends, take up her family's role as Champion of Humanity, and discover the true fate of the Marvel Family. Her quest takes her from the skyscrapers of America to the streets of Afghanistan, down the Fertile Crescent and into the savannahs of Africa and across the Asian continent to Japan, where she will face her father's deadliest enemy in the streets of Tokyo.

And then her true mission begins.

I tried to keep the references to the original Marvel Family fairly minimal, even going so far as to not actually call her "Captain Marvel"; in-story, the reason is because she ends up changing to and from her heroic form during her battle with "Captain Demon" (my reworked version of Sabbac) in front of hundreds of cell-phone-camera-equipped bystanders, sort of ruining her chances at a SECRET identity right off the bat. I haven't decided if I'll use the Lieutenant Marvels in the story; the idea was that they disappeared along with Billy, Mary, and Freddie, but I reference them with one of Billie's allies on the quest, Lt. Bill Abernathy, USMC, "Lieutenant Marvel" to his squadmates due to his uncanny luck and skill. Since one of her new patrons, Zarathustra, died in Afghanistan, and another, Marduk, was located in Iran, it seemed apropos to give her a military escort at one point, although his name should give a hint as to his ultimate role in her story.

It also seemed appropriate to have Billie finally say the word and become her hero form for the first time in Japan, because of the abundance of "henshin" heroes that follow the original Captain's M.O. I even had an idea for her first powered ally to be Tani, a tiger-spirit disguised as an idol singer who tags along with Billie in the hopes of the new hero's popularity bolstering her own flagging reputation.

I'm still trying to figure out the reason for her needing the new patrons, however. Originally, it was because the original powers of SHAZAM were now solely Freddie's (due to "Trials of Shazam") and, when I first created Billie here, because the original dieties had disappeared with her family. However, since I'm using the original Golden Age versions of the Marvel Family, that would mean Athena would have had to have disappeared as well. As it stands, Billie will probably be a decidedly different Marvel than her folks; by sheer coincidence, I accidentally gave her THREE trickster gods (Anansi, Hermes, and Susanoo) in her "Shazam matrix."

Below is the initial designs I did for Billie (which looked a little TOO "Power Girl" for my tastes...she's a 10-year-old tomboy, why would her idealized adult/hero form have huge boobs?) as well as a couple of attempts at deciding on a color scheme for her.

Heckfire,

Amazing idea! I have always enjoyed the various members of the Marvel family, and Billie is a great addition!
(I once wanted to create a new member of the 'family' but yours takes the cake for me.)

The henshin hero idea is really what hooked me. I really like the idea of her first transformation in Japan, with all the cameras and cell phones taking tons of pics of her, a new 'idol' is born in the minds of those Japanese pre-teens!

The tiger spirit is a nice touch, hope to see/hear more about this.

@GoldenBard: Coolness, I look forward to brainstorming!

@Florian: Let me know which you're trying and when it's done, I'd love to see it. My own inking skills are pretty rank, honestly.

@SuperHeroFan: Hey, don't let my creation stop you from trying something. That's part of why we're here, after all, LOL

As for Tani, I wanted to do something with "Tawky Tawny" (although I was gonna have Billie carrying her mom's old doll of him as Athena had enchanted it with a travel spell), and since Japan was already figuring big into the story, the pun of having a "Tawky Tani" in the story was too good to pass up.

I'll be honest, though, I've been focusing more on the three PDSH revamps in the previous post recently. My art mojo's been at a low ebb lately, but I've been getting some good development stuff done on them.

I wanted to start inking Billie Freeman, but my printer completely ran out of ink, so I tried to use Photoshop. Unfortunately, it didn't really look good. It'll have to wait. Sad

But as soon as it's done, you sure will be the first to see, of course! Smile
