PostSubject: PD/OS equivalents   PD/OS equivalents EmptySun Jan 22, 2012 4:05 am

I've recently read a Solomon Kane comic, and wonder if there's an equivalent of the character that would be public domain or open source. In fact, the same goes for other characters from Robert E. Howard.

I already know that Conan has a PD equivalent (Crom).

This thread could be used to ask for other equivalents of trademarked characters.

As far as I know, both Conan and Solomon Kane are public domain in the US, and the rest of the world. But yes, the trademarks are closely guarded and their visual interpretations are probably under copyright (though, you can do your own interpretation based on text description). If you fear the machine behind Conan, there are tons of PD alternatives (Herclues, Ben Hur, etc.). There are a number of ghost hunter characters, but not a lot of monster hunters like Kane. Closest I can think of is Mr. Monster and Detective Bently of Scotland Yard. Though, Bently's monsters always turned out to be human criminals in disguise, like Scooby Doo monsters...

Thanks. Smile

Come to think of it, two French authors have released a fanzine with two adaptations of R.E. Howard stories. I'll try to get in touch with them - and maybe see if they'll let me translate the stories. Found this on REH: http://www.robert-e-howard.org/AnotherThought4rerevised.html

Now, which characters could be the best subtitutes for the following?

Wolverine
Turok
Shadowman
Iron Man
Vision (Timely)
Captain Marvel (Marvel)
James Bond

There's also a few others, but I will post about them later. Sleepy right now.

Most of these characters are so unique, there isn't really a single golden age equivalent. Here are the best I can come up with:

Turok - Straight Arrow
Iron Man - Bozo, Scoot Suit Sammy or TNT Todd
Captain Marvel - Captain Atom? Atoman?
Vision - White Streak

Wolverine: go on PDSH wiki and search Category: Cat Themed characters. I recommend Cat Man (similar costume), Panther Woman (natural claws) or Manx (killed people). Any cat themed character could be given claws, a bad attitude and a healing factor.

James Bond: go on PDSH wiki and search Category:Cat Spy Characters. There are tons of them, but the most famous in the mainstream is the literary British spy, Richard Hannay, who was actually a n inspiration for the Bond character. I think Agent 99 was a British spy... While not a spy, the mercenary and former soldier, Bulldog Drummond was also an inspiration for Bond, due to the nature of his adventures..

Thanks!

Yes, it's becoming hard because I managed to create my own versions of copyrighted characters (such as an equivalent of Plastic Man/Lastikman and Carl Burgos' Captain Marvel named M-AKI). There's also a bunch of European comics characters I'd like to use, but I don't think they're known in English-speaking countries despite their being republished there through Hollywood Comics/Black Coat Press.
