PostSubject: Fandom Realms   Fandom Realms EmptyWed Jul 27, 2011 10:34 am

So, ages ago (before finding The Free Universe) I came up with this great idea: I would create a Web site, called Fandom Realms, in which I would create a group of open source concepts--based on classic characters--that would be open for fan fiction writers to write about, so that they could write about something close to their favorite characters without having to worry about some corporate stooge dropping a 3-ton cease-and-desist order on them.

Of course, the idea never came to fruition (largely because I didn't/don't have the time to devote to such a massive undertaking), but I did do some work on it (and will probably do other bits here and there). The superhero concept, which was supposed to ultimately have a correlate for every major superhero, was based on another concept I'd started earlier: Timeline Comics. Based on Big Bang Comics, the idea was to follow the history of an unknown comic company. So, let's start with those characters:

The Metaman family is obviously based on Superman's crew. Supposedly created by Gerry Josephs for DARING COMICS #1, Metaman came from the future to stop futuristic Nazi assassins from killing President Roosevelt and changing the course of history. After being trapped in the present, he used his incredible powers to battle evil. Later on, his "family" grew to include Metalad, Metagirl, and Max the Metadog:
Fandom Realms MetaMan Fandom Realms MetaLad Fandom Realms MetaGirl Fandom Realms MetaDog_Max

Gerry's friendly rivalry with Abe L. Roberts led Roberts to create his own character, who appeared in INVESTIGATION COMICS #3. The son of wealthy parents, Jonathan Gamble took over his parents' publishing empire. When mobster "Meatball" Marzoni killed a reporter friend with whom Gamble once played cards, Gamble took on the identity of Blackjack, battling crime with his gadget-laden scepter and his HQ, which was located in an abandoned lighthouse. He was later joined by a cousin's son, Ricky, who became The Wonder Kid, Ace. Later on, the DA's niece donned a costume to join them as the Red Queen:
Fandom Realms BlackJack Fandom Realms Ace Fandom Realms RedQueen

Charlene Mathers, who loved Greek mythology, created a character that first appeared in EXCITEMENT COMICS #7. Reporter Vicky Storm, near death after being attacked by Nazi saboteurs, asked the Statue of Liberty for some way to protect the liberty it stood for. The statue, of course, couldn't help her, but she was heard by the spirit of the Greek goddess Nike, who entered her body, healed her wounds, and made her Victory Woman! She was incredibly strong and fast, and could summon wings of light that not only allowed her to fly, but also deflected bullets:
Fandom Realms VictoryWoman

That's all for now; but I have more to post at a later date.

Bard,

loving it, the art is pretty cool too, how do you do those?

Nice idea to work on and I like Metaman. I've used DC's reboot as a jumping off point for comics something like this might just stir up a bit of interest.

Is there any further background material? or can we just jump straight in and use them as we want?

I've had an idea for an origin story for Metaman:

In a Utopian future Kenny Connor's mother has an illness during pregnancy, Kenny's life is at stake but Doctor's decide to try a pioneering new technique, they take Kenny from his mother and place him inside a Biowomb - he is fed special nutrients and nurtured for the remainder of his 9 months.

Unknown to the Doctor's the chemicals and nutrients make him plus human, super strength, agility, speed, intelligence. Later he learns to fly.

He is seen as the next step in human evolution. Metaman is then sent back to the past to fight off the Nazi troopers from killing Roosevelt and he decides to stay.

Needs a bit of work but you get the gist.

I like your origin, Transmookey. I had kept things pretty sketchy, and the implication (at least for the Golden Age Metaman) was that all people of the future had his powers, or it was part of his training in the future law-enforcement agency that sent him back in time. But I would definitely use your ideas for the Silver Age and Modern versions of the character!

Here are the only other details:
METAMAN FAMILY - His girlfriend is policewoman Lara Lamont (in the Silver Age, she became a Federal agent). He operates out of Meta-Tower, his HQ atop the tallest building in Metro City. His young friend is Dade Dodger. Max got his powers when Metaman was saving a puppy and got struck by lightning, which somehow transferred a portion of his powers to the dog, and allowed them to connect mentally. His villains have included The Killer Quartet, The Giant Mummy, The Missile Men, Professor Felon, Mega-man, Robot Master, The Hun, and Vulcan (the Greek god of fire). His arch-foe, who was working on the Roosevelt assassination, was evil scientist Rex Dominus. He is known as "The Scarlet Sentinel."

BLACKJACK FAMILY - Gamble's parents were Wayne & Vanessa. His reporter friend was Taylor Thomas. Police can contact him with a special flare that they fire. His enemies included Snake Eyes (a deformed sadist w/square eyes and tiny pupils), Femme Falcon (his femme fatale), Zig-Zag, The Troll, and Juggler.

VICTORY WOMAN - Her home/HQ is The Temple of Hope, a building on a small island in the center of the lake in Wallington. Her love interest is mythology professor Martin Stevens. The Sigma Pi sorority @ Wallington U became the "Victory Woman Fan and Support Club," following her around and often getting into trouble. She battled Count Hypno, The Blizzard, Jungle Queen, the evil Amazon Verna, Kylya the Valyrie, Wild Witch, and the dark centaur Kelnon.

The pics were done with the animated version of "Fabrica de Herois," which can be found at http://fabricadeherois.blogspot.com/

Just click on the animated version link in the upper right hand corner.

I find it a useful tool for quick costume designs, and makes art do-able for someone like me with no artistic talent!

Yeah, goldenbard, your character designs are totally awesome.
However I Have some questions:
1.Will your fandom realms site be launched anytime soon?
2.Can I Do The same thing as you?
3.Will you be featuring your characters in actual comic books any time soon?

We already have plenty of Superman-analogue characters (including Astro-Man, though maybe as a member of the Protectors he's moving away from that a bit?) but I like the Silver Agey flavor of these guys.

Thanks, argosail. Why do you ask about French? Because I don't; I barely remember enough of the Spanish I took in high school to order @ Taco Bell!

Glad you like them gdude. To tell the truth, I honestly doubt the fandom realms site will ever come to pass; that's one of the reasons that I'm using this forum as a way to to get the characters "out there," in case anyone wants to use them.

Basically, all I did was take famous, established character archetypes and build on them, similar to the way the board members created Astro-Man, and then throw together some costumes for them. So, yeah, of course you can do the same thing! I really didn't do anything incredibly special or unique.

Don't know if or when I'll be doing anything else with the characters beyond creating them, but if I do it will probably be text stories. As I mentioned, I have NO artistic ability, nor do I know anybody who can draw, so I don't see how I could possibly do actual comic books.

Tomorrow I'll probably be posting more, up next is the Fandom Realms answer to Captain America, a mystic hero, and a really weird "Golden Age" hero, because the Golden Age gave us some really weird heroes...

Well, as I said, I started this idea ages ago, before I ever found this board or heard of Astro-Man. And because Superman has always been my favorite superhero, I couldn't pass up a chance to create a similar character. Did the world really NEED another Superman knock-off? Probably not. But this little universe I was creating just wouldn't have felt complete without one.

just to add to Metaman fake publishing history,

In the late 1960's a rival to Daring Comics, Awesome Adventures, heroes of yesteryear with a feel of tomorrow, launched and had an immediate impact on Metaman sales.

Readers loved the new gritty characters from Awesome Adventures and Daring Comics decided it was time to revamp their best seller.

In 1972, Gerry Joseph's son, Elliot, took over as the head writer on Metaman and reinvented the character, having a now grown up Metaboy take over the mantle and bringing in a new wisecracking Metaboy and Metagirl (with a body to die for!)

The new Metaman picked up regular readers again and sales increased so much that spin off titles featuring (Golden Age) Metaman and new Metaboy/girl were introduced.

During the 'Attitude' era of the early to mid-nineties Daring Comics were caught up in reimagining the character yet again, with a slightly different version of the Golden Age story being used.

Great ideas, Transmooky. If I ever get around to writing about the Silver Age of Timeline Comics, I’ll have to incorporate them! To be honest, I hadn’t quite figured out yet where Metalad and Metagirl came from...

Timeline’s next big hero was created for SIZZLING COMICS by Joe Kingman, who had been working on the sword-and-sorcery character “Strongar the Warrior” (a continuation of a character from Timeline’s pulp magazines). When it looked like Strongar was going to be replaced by a superhero, Joe created a character with a S&S feel… In the origin tale, museum watchman Kirby Russell, who had been turned down by the armed services, volunteered to test a serum designed to speed the healing process. The tests failed. That night, criminals broke into the museum seeking an herb, found in an Egyptian Coptic jar, that supposedly helped cure wounds. Their boss had been shot, and they wanted the herb to heal him. To see if it was safe, they force-fed some of the herb to Kirby. It reacted with the serum in his blood, increasing his stamina, strength, speed, and musculature. He stopped the crooks and revealed his secret to the museum’s Dr. Klein, who told him: “You wanted to go abroad, son, but you can better use your talents here, acting as a Sentry on our boarders, protecting us from evil!” He and Kirby designed an outfit and borrowed a shield and sword from the museum’s collection. Klein’s niece added a love interest, and her brother Tommy joined with 4 friends to form the Young Guards, a combination fan club/sidekick team. The Sentry’s main foe was the Red Wizard. Not long after, Kirby was sent to battle the Nazis.
Fandom Realms Sentry

Kingman later teamed up with Metaman’s Gerald Josephs to revamp another old pulp character for WEIRD FUN COMICS. The original Dr. James Eerie was an occult investigator. In the comics, his battle with The Astrologer fused his magic amulet to his chest, giving him mystic powers to fly, shoot mystic energy blasts, and control the elements. He was joined by a showgirl named Ginger and an imp named Oswald.
Fandom Realms DrEerie

Another writer worried about his job was Mark Louis, who did westerns for the pulp SIX-GUN ADVENTURES. He wound up creating the Steel Sherriff for PINNACLE COMICS. Texas Ranger David Dallas, mortally wounded when stopping industrial spies from breaking into a lab, has his brain transplanted into a robot body to save his life. Very strong, impervious to harm, and able to see in the dark, Dallas decided to continue his work, wearing his old hat, vest, and six shooter.

I don't really know what to tell you, great dude. Like I said, I just started with basic archetype ("mega-powerful icon," "dark detective vigilante," etc.), and just threw in some stuff that sounded like it might work, then whipped up the costumes on that site that I linked earlier in the thread.

argosail wrote:

He is wonderfully, stupidly Golden Age, isn't he? In Big Bang Comics, they had a robot archer hero named "Robo-Hood." I knew I'd eventually need a "Robot Man" type of hero, and liked the idea of having him be a specialist rather than just a generic robot guy. I'm not sure how that finally coalesced into Steel Sheriff... My brain is a strange place of weird connections and bizarre combinations!

Oh, and given the explanation at the beginning, it should be obvious, but just in case, let me state it flat out:

All these characters are Open Source. Do what you will with them, just include the following paragraph:

"[CHARACTER NAME] is an open source character, available for use by anyone. Each work containing this character must contain this paragraph so that the character can be used by others."

Oops, sorry Transmooky! I've been doing it so long that I just forgot that it's not obvious...

As far as I know, there's no way on the site to save the characters. What I do (and this is for Windows; if you're on a Mac you'll have to figure out something similar for yourself) is hit "Print Screen." This takes a picture of the screen and saves it in the memory. Then I open up my art program (I use Paint.net, which is free @ http://www.getpaint.net/) and paste the picture into a blank file. Then I crop and edit as needed and save it as whatever file type I want. I usually save as jpegs, simply because we used them at a place where I used to work, so that's what I'm used to.

For the record, I also use Paint.net for "tweaking" the images, like creating and sizing Steel Sheriff's badge.

Well, I'm hardly an expert, and I don't know your system or what program you're using, so it's kind of hard for me to say... At a guess, all I can think of is that when I bring the screen shot into the program, it's too big and I have it increase the canvas size to fit it. It sounds like your program may be doing the opposite, and shrinking the shot to fit the canvas, making it smaller? Check that out; otherwise I'm at a loss, so you might have to make friends with someone who's more of an expert than I am!

Glad so many people liked Steel Sheriff. Sadly, he didn't hold the top position in PINNACLE COMICS for long. After 4 issues, he was moved to the back of the book to make room for Turbo, The World's Quickest Man! Auto mechanic Mark Sheldon working on a new super fuel, succumbed to the fumes of his latest experiment and, as he passed out, spilled the fluid on himself. All night long, the fluid seeped in thru his skin and the fumes thru his lungs. He awoke with superspeed and became Turbo, battling foes that usually were based on natural forces: Lava-Man, Dr. Darkness, and Wind Woman. (The first picture is the Golden Age Turbo. The second is his Silver Age incarnation.)

BRIGHT HOPES COMICS number 15 was the first appearance of Neptune. Lighthouse keeper Paul Benard, combing the beaches after a terrible storm, found a bottle that, according to the attached scroll, came from Atlantis! Paul drank the fluid within, gaining the power to survive under water and make water obey his commands. He began battling evil in the town of Mariner's Port.
Fandom Realms Neptune

By issue 19, the cover of BRIGHT HOPE COMICS was split between Neptune and a new star, Golden Fire. He was really crop-duster Scott Willis, who found a piece of meteoric glass that gave him the ability to surround himself with fire and make the flames take whatever shape he desired.

Just one for today: DA David Merlin, frustrated by the way that wealthy criminals could beat the system, decided to become a sort of modern Robin Hood, robbing from these crooks, using the evidence he found to put them away and using their ill-gotten gains to make restitution to the victims. Because he operated between the dark and the light, and because he did his work at night, he became known as The Gray Owl.
