| Hi everyone! I'm a grad student in Medieval literature who writes fiction in what I laughingly call my spare time. The first comic I ever read, believe it or not, was the Marvel Milestone Edition reprint of Uncanny X-Men #1, and ever since then I've had a particular love for Silver Age and Bronze Age Marvel comics. I'm a very old-school sort of comics fanboy. I miss the sense of wonder and the mythic and philosophical overtones of those comics. I'm sick to death of the "realistic" approach to writing superheroes that prevails these days, Grant Morrison and a few others aside. If I never see another black ops-type superhero book, it will be too soon. I have been fascinated by the whole concept of open-source characters in general and Jenny Everywhere in particular since I came across the now long-vanished original JE site from years ago. I also love the public domain heroes, I love the chance to explore the history of the superhero genre and to re-imagine some of the past characters without having to worry about the fact that my writing doesn't fit contemporary Big Two sensibilities at all. To me, this project of ours is a great starting point for recovering the strangeness and imagination of the superhero genre.

| I should probably also mention that I have Asperger's Syndrome, which . It helps me in my writing because I'm very obsessive about reading and writing and am able to draw unexpected connections between things, as well as being able to remember all kinds of obscure trivia, but it also gives me difficulties interacting with people, so sometimes I can come off as overbearing and/or incoherent. I'm also not exactly good at being organized, which can make teaching difficult (this is my first semester teaching), and I haven't yet actually finished a story. I'm working on that. I did write a fair number of articles for the PDSH wiki earlier this year, though. | |

| Well, thank you for your help on the PDSH wiki and welcome to the Free Universe forums. My brother is a teacher, and I am a former substitute, so I understand a little bit of your pain. I also have a good friend with a mild case of Aspergers, so I understand that a little also. I can tell you are a good writer. Everything you've written so far has been not only coherent, but thoughtful. It's good to have another writer on the boards. Our friend Yzz is also pretty good. | |

| Note that I have a Deviantart page now. It's here, and I've mainly used it so far for posting HeroMachine designs, but whenever I finish that Wonder Man story I'll post it there too. | |

| Nice stuff on your page, Knight Random! I wasn't thrilled with the older version of HeroMachine, but I've seen some really impressive stuff from the latest version (including the stuff you did). I'm going to have to check it out again one of these days... | |

| Welcome to the forum!
I can definitely relate to being an old-school fanboy. The "gritty" and "realistic" approaches of today lack the wonder and joy of the old comics. Every now and then I find something that I like ok, but it's hard to find.
I actually like the stories Morrison did earlier in his career, Doom Patrol and the Invisibles, but not so much interested what he's currently doing with the new 52 DC Universe.
Amongst the current comics, the new Fantastic Four and FF look promising, especially FF being drawn by Mike Allred, who's so very inspired by older comics and brings a lot of fun to his drawings. | |
