Creating a "Classic" super hero... Empty
PostSubject: Creating a "Classic" super hero...   Creating a "Classic" super hero... EmptySat Jul 27, 2013 7:17 am

Greetings,

I have been trying to create what I consider a "classic" superhero.  I understand

that for everybody that means something different.  I guess I am thinking along

the lines of a narrative tone of the "Super Powers Collection" from the 1980s.  It was

bubble gum, cool vehicles, and super characters with a code of honor and a positive outlook.

A continuation of Adam West's delivery of Batman.

===============================================================

I understand that this brings it's own challenges. For one thing it lacks a certain amount

of depth that creates drama in the story lines.  The truth is, though,

that I am burned out on grim, gritty comics, featuring deconstructed heroes and over the top

gore.  While it hooks me initially, it becomes like a car alarm going off and I tune it

out.

====================================================================

I realize I am starting to ramble so here is the point.  I would like to draw an open source comic

book starring a character that has an optimistic outlook, and who also possesses some cool powers,

vehicles, and a "nifty" head quarters.  An arch enemy wouldn't hurt.

====================================================================

I think as far as story tone it would drift towards campy but would't have to be full throttle.  Not sure if

anyone will be interested in throwing in some ideas or even their two cents but I welcome input.

Sounds like you have many of the same likes and dislikes that I do, so I'll be interesting to see what you come up with. Do you have a germ of an idea that you want to build this character around? Are you looking to create something totally new, or update an existing PD character? Or do you not care either way?

I would like to create a new character because I enjoy the process.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The PD character that I would re-make, if I was going that route,

would be the Scarlet Avenger. His name is just so cool.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

That being said I would like to create a character who has a basic

power like super strength and pilots or drives some sort of cool vehicle.

I see him going on adventures like the classic Sherlock Holmes, where we

have an established world that we understand and can quickly jump into.

Wow, I just drummed up a "hero" very much along this vein today at work. As the story coagulating in my brain takes shape A motley group of four protaganists came to mind. One of whom is your classic pulp hero persona. Strong but not incredibly brilliant. Handsome enough to make all the girls turn their heads but with a long term personality thats more like a rusted cheese grater that got thru college on a football scholarship.

He does indeed have a super power, but as is alot of pulp heros don't often display alot of overt or complicated powers. So being a dichotemous charator he is naturally oblivious to his super power... I look foward to seeing if your hero and mine are cousins!

Very cool. One of the things I am finding the most challenging in the creation process

is finding themes and ideas that haven't already been over used.

Your idea sounds intriguing. Will it be a web comic?

Creating is easy for me. As my hobby has been role playing for almost 2 decades I drum up ideas, people, places on the fly and roll with it. As it stands right now since I last posted I have at least 5 chapters worth of this story in my brains. Just need time to put it down on a shareable format. Most likely I will be just writing it on writing.com. Id'e like to draw it out on webcomic but my stickfigures really would not convey the emotions in the story well.

Do you have any "one off" superhero character ideas I

could turn into a twelve page comic? Something simple

and fun? Of course you would have to put up with my somewhat

dubious artistic skill when reading the final product...

Oh, and sorry for my giant signature banner image. I can't figure out how

to make it smaller. It's a bit much right now...
