PostSubject: Open Source/ PD Indiana Jones stand-in   Open Source/ PD Indiana Jones stand-in EmptyFri Mar 24, 2017 1:19 am

Hey guys,

I've been wondering what to do to include Indiana Jones in my universe. My ideas were:

Just refer to him in passing, never by his full name; enough to indicate his adventures took place in the universe (either exactly as in the official stories, or modified).

Substitute another character, or the descendant of another character- Pimpernel Smith, Walt Worthington ( http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Walt_Worthington ), or a relative of Professor Challenger or Allan Quatermain- and imply some of Indiana Jones' exploits were done by this character.

Create a new character as a stand-in.

Any thoughts?

My current thinking is that, as Allan Quatermain had at least one son named Harry, which used to be a variant of Henry, Henry Jones Snr and Jr could be Henry(s) Quatermain instead? (A) Harry Quatermain died in 1884, so Henry senior could be a relative named in memory of him, or - which I prefer - Harry is Henry Snr, and his death was faked while he did some highly secret work for the Empire, possibly in Sudan (the Madhist War), or (which I think is a better fit) spying in the Congo Free State.

Alternatively, the role of Henry Snr can be taken by Prof. Challenger, and his son can be the Indiana Jones substitute, perhaps George Jnr, or Henry.

Cpt. W,

I like the idea of a original character that may or may not be related to a globe trotting adventurer.

Clive Reston is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics Universe patterned on James Bond and Roper from the Bruce Lee Movie Enter the Dragon.

Clive Reston first appeared in Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu issue three, in 1974, created by Doug Moench. He went on to be a recurring character in the Master of Kung Fu series, as well as occasionally appearing in other series such as Rom and X-Men. He also appeared in the MAX series Wisdom, centered on the character Pete Wisdom. Originally, Reston's father was intended to be James Bond, and his granduncle was intended to be Sherlock Holmes, however due to copyright laws Marvel was forced to abandon this.

My humble opinion, use him as someone that COULD be related, like you suggest with Quatermain.

Thanks. I had heard of Clive Reston, but never really looked too far into his background (in fiction or IRL).

I was thinking further that Harry Quatermain could be given the cover identity/ new legal name Henry Smith, then his son (the Indiana Jones stand-in) would be Henry Smith Jnr; it's therefore blatant who the character represents, but hopefully free of IP infringement.

Exactly, and speaking of Reston, the writers at marvel dropped 'hints' that weren't hints lol about Bond, a reference to a gun, mission, etc., then Marvel started getting worried I think if it was too obvious, but I liked reading them, picturing him as a relative.

I'd read the heck out of an Indiana Jones yet not Indy sort of a book!

Sweet. He's basically the alternate reality version of Indiana Jones that exists in my universe. I already had some unnamed references to Indiana Jones in my timeline, so I'm altering them to be Quatermain's grandson. I know that in the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles he was involved in a lot more adventures, meeting historical figures, fighting in World War 1, and getting a superhero name - Captain Dynamite, Scourge of the Kaiser. As I planned on having ancient relics appear quite a bit, it means my Indy stand-in can see a lot of action.

Ok, so the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail are sorted, and the Spear of Destiny is in Vienna (apart from when the Germans took it), so I'm looking for other items for Harry to look for. I think that a magical sword or other weapon, probably from Norse or Celtic mythology, would be a good fit, especially Norse/ Germanic legends.

As well as http://free-universe.myartsonline.com/elements.html, we also have https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mythological_objects, which is pretty huge.

Some form of magical armour or protective item might be good, something Hitler would want to keep himself safe. Perhaps the "Golden Coat of Chainmail", part of Fafnir's treasure which Sigurd took after he slew the dragon.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_Attila also seems like something Hitler might want. It also might interest Dracula, which could tie in nicely with my Dracula stuff.

Hey, guys; just decided to check in and saw this thread. I like your idea here, Whizz. Are you going to keep the Quartermain name? I would because I like the connection. And I love the idea because, really Indy was inspired (in part) by Quartermain, so having a Quartermain replace Dr. Jones would be more than appropriate!

I have always liked reading different cultures' myths, especially Egyptian, Japanese and the English/Scottish/Celtic ones.

Moon Knight was always a favorite of mine, esp w/the Ancient Egyptian connection. (Is there a MK equivalent in the PD?)

Glad you're getting your universe in order, mine's stalled twice lol.

I'm going to keep the Quatermain name, although he will probably use aliases.

My Moon Knight substitute is the Ghost/ Ghost Rider. I figure that they dress similarly and have similar names, so I'm connecting them. Not finalised the details, but some version of people about to die visited by a supernatural being and making a deal where the person cannot die until they have fulfilled their goal (revenge or whatever).
Both will be involved in hunting supernatural creatures, as well as mundane villains.

So, the Ghost, or GR will allow them to live, just until they take care of their business? Sounds pretty good. Are you giving him (sort of) MK's powers given to him by Khonshu, or is he a "guide" of sorts to the afterlife, if I'm reading it right? I think if he were willing to assist the person trying to fulfill their task could work, but just an idea.

*I've stalled three times on my universe so far. I can't decide if I want the heroic characters to be heroes through technological means, or a virus.
I'm trying to fit a WW2 character in with some characters from 1950s -70s or 80s. I'm going for a generational (sort of) team that exists in mine.
I've even stalled in my timeline because I want a little alternate history in there, not too much where current events have changed so much.

I've got a few characters picked out - Rangers of Freedom, Rocketman, Rocketgirl (sort of DC's Adam Strange)

My idea was a Shield type organization + heroes + alien threat

I was thinking of using Capt. Battle, or Battle Jr., but I thought you were using one of them.

Got any ideas to jumpstart my universe?

Ghost Rider/ Ghost in mine will be characters who were on the point of death, with unfulfilled business, like loved ones in danger or something, and are offered a return to life, powers, etc, so that they can do what they need to do, but in return they owe service to the thing that gave them powers.

I haven't really got any plans for Captain Battle, other than he was just going to be the officer in charge of the military superheroes in WWII.

Captain Whizz,

How's your character building/world building coming? Unfortunately, I've pretty much stopped w/mine as health issues IRL are kicking my butt.

Very OT: Anyone know how much a decent artist (amateur or professional) would ask to draw some character designs, like front/back/side, like in the old Marvel Universe Handbooks?

My attention is all over the place still, but I'm still trying to focus on a couple of story lines- the 1930s, pre-WWII ideas with the Nazis at the Land That Time Forgot, and the Dracula story.
