| Thanks. Due to professional considerations, I couldn't get to draw as much as I expected, but now I've got a few more pictures I think you'll all appreciate. | |

| "Cover for an upcoming Dark Fates story featuring Shiko-chan. SimonKirby, do you have any advice to give me, please?"My advice is as follows: 1. Treat the character as she was originally intended: a pastiche of the Magic Girl genre, particularly the Sailor Moon franchise. You said on DA that the joshikosei uniform was too cliched, but in actual fact, it was one of the defining elements of Japanese animation in the 80s and 90s. If you have any plans of dealing with her as a retro character, I'd suggest you take a closer look at the source material. 2. Shiko's main antagonists are the demonic entities of the Shadow Realm. As the name suggests, they are dark, inhuman creatures constantly lurking at the periphery of human vision. Particularly active at night, they seem to be composed of pure evil and exist only to wreak havok on the Mortal World. As "psychic vampires," they feed on the fear and terror of their victims, gradually draining their life force over a period of days. The process is quite torturous; very few human beings can survive an encounter with a Kumori and those who do are reduced to withered husks. 3. Shiko's primary defense is the light-staff she carries on her person at all times. Being telescopic in construction, it can be folded down into a 12 inch tube that can easily be hidden in a schoolbag or satchel. Extended to its full five feet, it is a formidable weapon through which she can focus her "radiant" (ie photonic) energies. Virtually indestructible once activated, the staff can slice through reinforced steel with virtually no resistance, and is the only thing capable of killing a Kumori on this plane of existence (Shiko can, of course, fire bolts of light directly from her hands, but such attacks tend to be far less effective, lacking the Staff's refining properties). 4. Due to her extra-dimensional origins, Shiko is considerably stronger than the average human male, capable of surviving near-lethal injuries and recover from attacks which would otherwise cripple her. Her supernatural reflexes and agility give her a deadly edge over her opponents, particularly after she receives basic training in the martial arts. Although she can be a savage and relentless fighter, she nonetheless follows a code against unnecessary violence, only unleashing the full force of her powers against the Kumori and other demons (which she has no hesitation whatsoever in killing). 5. Due to her upbringing (originally raised in the country by her step-parents), Shiko is something of a loner and quite mistrusting of strangers. If she's going to work alongside Ewen Merrick, he will have to invest a great deal of time earning her confidence. I would suggest this would be a significant theme of the general storyline; Shiko overcoming her suspicions and Ewin learning to respect both her reclusive personality and her prodigious skills as a warrior. BTW: Here's my first illustration of Shiko-chan, the version I used before Wikipedia censored it:

| Thank you very much for your advice! I really appreciate that you took the time to explain it all, and I think the wiki readers/aspiring authors would appreciate it too. OK, I had a few ideas of my own before, because I had no indication yet, but I guess they can't work out - except the mistrusting part, which is a constant element in Dark Fates' universe. Ewen Merrick is inexplicably teamed up with people he doesn't really know/appreciate/trust, he's a kind of loner who's carried away by fate. | |

Dear Florian,
Shiko is an open source character, you can use her any way you choose. I was simply explaining my view of the character; you don't have to follow my opinions (because that's all they are; opinions).
You're free to develop Shiko-chan in any direction you wish, and I'm sure everyone here (including myself), is interested in seeing more of your work in the near future.
Cheers, Simon.

| It's understood. It's just the ideas I had in mind would have been too much. Shiko would have had an American father and a Japanese mother, making her a social outcast with suicidal tendencies and a mind about to break as the Shadow Realm strikes. But now, I just don't wanna copy the elements I already used in Dark Fates (and in Deliah Hill's Torment, an old collective webcomic that was discontinued) and prefer to do something more light-hearted now, probably because I've read Sailor Moon since. Speaking of Deliah Hill, I intended to use The Green Claw in an unreleased chapter of the story and even made a preliminary drawing, but it seems I've never scanned it. I'll do when I find it. | |

| It's been a while since I last posted here! I'll tell the whole story later, for now I'll be posting PD-related drawings. A concept sketch for a story involving Arcadia Graphic Studio's characters Sentinel and Smasher with the then-open source character Kongzilla, who disappeared from the PDSH Wiki. An Amazona revamp. Presto Kid you've seen before, sketch version. Jenny Everywhere 2014. My character Die Letzte versus Fantomah. Fantomah. | |
