| Here's a question for anyone with some movie knowledge. I just need to know if the movie "The Amazing Colossal Man" that was produced in 1957 might be Public Domain.
I ask because the name "Colossal Man" is great and in searching, I happened upon this movie. I've seen bits and pieces of it and it's been parodied on Mystery Science Theater, so I am really really thinking it just might be PD.
Anyone have ANY clue if this might be the case?
Thanks to any and all replies!

| Well, this site seems to be straight from the guys who did MST3K and indicates that it is PD, but I found 2 different forums were it was argued that MGM owns the rights to it.

| Classic drive-fair. You should also check out the fallow-up War of the Colossal Beast It has one of my all time favorite posters. I've also herd conflicting reports about wether The Amazing Colossal Man is PD. I thought I read something to the effect that MST3000 version couldn't be released on DVD because of its of the status of its ownership.

| Thanks Yzz & Ultimosteve.
Basically it just may not be PD right now. Poop. However, I'm thinking there could be some way to use the name. I also want to use the name and have the character capable of increasing his size and mass to that of a giant. I know there are a few PD characters available whose names I could use but "Colossal Man" just sounds a lot better.
I recall seeing "The Amazing Colossal Man" a few times but only bits and pieces of it on a late night "Fright Night" type cable TV show many many years ago and also have seen it parodied on MST3K. Never saw the sequel so thanks for sharing that poster, I dig it!
I can imagine seeing these movies, awful as they may be, at a Drive-In movie theater. Bet it was a hoot.

| If you make a mass-shifter named Colossal Man, you'll have be that you don't make him too similar toDC's Colossal Boy. ~~Yzz | |

| @Yzz: I already know about Colossal Boy from the Legion of Super-Heroes. I still think I could do it because A. It'd be Colossal MAN, and B. there wouldn't be any similarities to that character other than some of his abilities, like increasing his mass and size.
I haven't even settled on calling him Colossal Man, but a variation of the name.

~~Yzz That site has no association with any of the people from MST3K. That's more of a fan-run site that offers MST3K episodes for sale, on the condition that the episodes are currently not available through Shout Factory (the company that releases the MST3K boxed sets). Regarding "The Amazing Colossal Man", searching the US Copyright Office's website turns-up a Renewal filed by Selma Enterprises for the 1957 movie. I assume that if this movie was Public Domain, it wouldn't show-up on USCO's site.

| @bchat: Thanks for searching the info for the Amazing Colossal Man movie rights. Here's the deal. I think it MAY still be possible to use the name and idea to a certain degree. How? By not using the adjective "Amazing". Possibly.
If I did create this character with the name, guaranteed it'd be nothing like the movie character in any way with exception to his growth abilities.
I may just let it go but thanks to all for the input.
